Imphal, September 22 2023:
Lauding all the MPs who endorsed the Women's Reservation Bill 2022 under the 128th Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2023 in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha during the special parliament session, All Manipur Nupi Marup has demanded the union cabinet to take specific decision to implement the same instantly the day after the Bill becomes an Act.
In a release, Nupi Marup secretary L Sumatibala recalled that National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) including All Manipur Nupi Marup has been demanding clearance to the long-awaited Women's Reservation Bill.
During the second term of the UPA government backed by Left parties, the Bill was passed in Rajya Sabha on March 9, 2010 but failed to clear the Lok Sabha hurdle.
Even though PM Narendra Modi had assured of passing the Women Reservation Bill if the people handed over the power to BJP, NFIW filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court against the failure to introduce the bill even after nine years.
Later, a bench of the court headed by Justice Sanjib Khanna issued notice to the union government seeking explanation for not introducing the bill in the parliament.
NFIW and All Manipur Nupi Marup further demanded to pass the bill at the special session of the parliament.
Subsequently, considering the notice of Supreme Court, Narendra Modi introduced the bill in the special session, she elaborated.
The main objective of the bill is to earmark 33 per cent of the Lok Sabha seats for women i.e., to attain 181 seats out of 543 seats, Su matibala maintained while adding that the inclusion of another clause to implement the bill after conducting census post Lok Sabha election in 2024 and delimitation exercise in assembly constituencies is a strategy to woo women voters and ensure that BJP emerges victorious in the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
NFIW and All Manipur Nupi Marup did not want to take credit for passing of the bill, but simply raised the demand for ensuring equality between man and woman, the secretary maintained, while reiterating that the union cabinet should adopt a decision to implement the bill in all the states right after it becomes an Act as it was already passed in both houses of the Parliament.
