Imphal, August 09 2023:
Former chief minister and CLP leader O Ibobi Singh has said that convening of a special session of Manipur Legislative Assembly to take a resolution to end the ongoing violence is absolutely necessary.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the Quit India Movement commemoration event organised by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) at Congress Bhavan here on Wednesday, O Ibobi Singh said that 10 like-minded political parties have been urging the Governor to convene a special session of the state assembly in view of the prevailing situation in Manipur.
Congress party believes that resolution taken in the special session to end the ongoing violence would be fruitful if the same was sent to Parliament for discussion and government must also ensure that all the members take part in the special assembly session.
He also said that government must find out concrete reasons behind members opposed to convening a special session of the state assembly.
According to O Ibobi Singh, there must be a way to end the ongoing violence without unwanted incident and even the Constitutional help should be sought to sort out differences among stakeholders by holding dialogue.
Nevertheless, territorial integrity of Manipur must not be affected while bringing normalcy, he said, adding that steps being taken up by the government to end the violence remain quite contrasting to what the Congress party thinks.
He maintained that violence will never bring an end to the present crisis and peace should be utilised as a tool in finding solution.
Regarding complaint against Assam Rifles, O Ibobi Singh said that prior complaint should have been made to relevant authority if the role of the paramilitary force in containing the violence happens to be incomplete or the force takes side.
If there happens to be dissatisfaction over the conduct of the force, a concrete report must be given to Union home minister or Prime Minister and merely submitting a memorandum demanding withdrawal of the force would not be meaningful, Ibobi said, adding that memorandum can be sent by anyone.
Earlier, MPPC president K Meghachandra led Congress MLAs and party leaders paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters who led Quit India Movement and collectively took the pledge to strengthen the nation and protect Constitution.
The event was also attended by AICC CWC member Gaikhangam, MLAs.
