Sit-in, rally slam India's geopolitical policy, Jiri violence

Bishnupur, June 14 2024: Demanding immediate halt to India's alleged policy to annihilate and uproot the Meetei community, Ningthoukhong Protection Committee (NPC) organised a sit-in-protest at Ningthoukhong Bazar on Friday and chanted slogans against India's geopolitical policy.

Apart from women vendors and locals, the protest was also attended by caretaker councillors of Ward No 1 to 14 of Ningthoukhong Municipal Council.

NPC women's wing president RK Tombisana Devi told media persons that the protest was organised against the war waged by Kuki militants on Meetei community since May 3, 2023 .

While contending that chief minister N Biren used to intermingle with the public before the election but has remained silent despite continuous suffering of the people, she also alleged that the central forces are taking side with Kuki narco-terrorists under the pretext of upholding the SoO pact but remains as mute spectators when Kuki militants rain bullets on Meetei villages.

Further accusing the present administration of allowing such illegal acts, she demanded handing over of the state administration to the people if both the Centre and state governments are unable to bring an end to the present war.

During the protest, several slogans were raised demanding immediate implementation of NRC in Manipur, non-acceptance of India's geopolitical policy, withdrawal of Assam Rifles and removal of security advisor and DGP from their posts.

Protestors also held placards condemning the burning of Meetei houses by Kuki militants in Jiribam district and evacuation of Meetei and subsequent burning of their abandoned houses during the protest.

Similarly, denouncing the killing and attacks on Meeteis by Kuki militants in Jiribam district where many have been rendered homeless and accom modated in relief camps, Bishnupur Akoiba Apunba Lup (BAAL) organised a rally on Friday and raised slogans at the Bishnupur Bazar forest gate.

Meira Paibi activists from different areas under the jurisdiction of BAAL namely Ngakchoupokpi, Ngaikhong Khullen, Ngaikhong Siphai, Toubul, Khoijuman, Kwashiphai, Nachouand Kha Potshangbam gathered at Bishnupur forest gate and took out the rally passing through Bishnupur Bazar.

The rallyists shouted slogans demanding removal of security advisor Kuldiep Singh and DGP Rajiv Singh, withdrawal of Assam Rifles from Manipur, extending solidarity to people of Jiribam and upholding the territorial integrity of Manipur, among others.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the protest, Lup president L Devchand Singh opined that the ethnic conflict between the Meetei and Kuki spread to Jiribam due to laxity on the part of the government.

As the conflict lingers despite heavy deployment of central security forces in the state, security advisor Kuldiep Singh and the DGP should resign within a week, he demanded, while adding that people can extend help to the chief minister if he wants their support.

However, intense protest will be launched if firm decision and effective measures are not initiated within a week, he cautioned.
