Imphal, April 18 2010:
In compliance with a Supreme Court directive to enquire into the incidents of abusing children from Northeastern States, particularly Manipur and Assam with the false promise of providing them education outside the State, a team of the National Commission for Protection Child Rights (NCPCR) arrived at Imphal today.
In a ruling issued on March 31, the Supreme Court directed the NCPCR to enquire into the case of trafficking children from the Northeastern States and submit a report within four weeks.
The team comprising of the Commission's Registrar Binod Kumar Sahu and Consultant Ramnath Nayak, after arriving at Imphal, held a meeting with Social Welfare Director G Satyabati, representatives of Child Welfare Committee and members of NGOs working for child rights.
The meeting studied whether the cases of child trafficking were done in organised form.
It also deliberated on how to rehabilitate rescued children and also to prevent such cases of child trafficking in future.
After the meeting, the NCPCR officials interacted with the 27 children rescued from Tamil Nadu recently observed their condition at Takyel Children Home.
Interestingly, the Social Welfare Director earlier denied rescuing the 27 children from Chennai.
The team will visit Tousem in Tamenglong district tomorrow.
Of the around 100 Manipuri children rescued from some South Indian States recently, more than half of them belong to Tousem.
Before leaving Imphal on April 21, the team would also meet officials of the Home Department and collect a report from the State Government about the measures it has taken up to check child trafficking.
The team has already visited Chennai and NC Hills.
