Kakching, May 22 2024:
Wabagai MLA Dr Usham Deben has contended that the state government did not approve deployment of 33 Assam Rifles at the Inspection Bungalow (IB) of Irrigation and Flood Control Department at Keirak under Kakching district.
He made the clarification during a joint meeting with locals, who are protesting against deployment of Assam Rifles at the location, and assured to respect sentiment and uphold interest of the people.
Mention may be made that large number of Meira Paibi activists of Keirak, Wabagai-Hiyanglam, Kakching and surrounding areas took to the street when a team of 33 Assam Rifles with base in Lilong came to Keirak IB for deployment on May 15.The protestors blocked the road opposing deployment of Assam Rifles in the area and forced the AR troopers to return.
As the AR personnel told them that they would definitely return, the Meira Paibi members blocked the road with earth and logs on the road connecting Keirak Yawabung to Sekmaijin Barrage while staying on guard to prevent entry of the AR team in case they return.
Meanwhile, MLA Dr Usham Deben had a meeting with residents of the area at Keirak Yawabung Keithel on Wednesday during which the locals strongly opposed the plan to deploy Assam Rifles in the area and outrightly told the MLA that they do not need AR there.
Instead, they asked the MLA to deploy state force and set up a commando complex there.
During the meeting, MLA Deben told the residents that the government did not give approval for deployment of Assam Rifles at the IFCD's IB, which is a public property and also assured to uphold the interest of the local residents while revealing that he had talked with the chief minister in this regard.
The MLA also conveyed confirmation from Kakching DC and SP that there is no official letter regarding deployment of Assam Rifles at the IB along with expressing that the district administration shall not give any such approval.
Dr Deben also suggested that the locals submit a memorandum to the chief minister about their demand for setting up a commando complex at the IB .
