Imphal, November 12 2025: Students of Ibotonsana Girls' Higher Secondary School formed a human chain in front of their school today, demanding the translation of academic textbooks into Manipuri language.

Organised under the aegis of the Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), the demonstration saw students holding placards inscribed in Meitei Mayek and raising slogans for the protection and promotion of the Manipuri language among other demands.

Speaking to the media on the sideline, MSF general secretary Sundar Khuman stated that the Federation had submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on May 12, 2025, urging necessary steps to enable students to pursue their studies in their mother tongue.

However, no tangible action has been taken so far, prompting MSF to launch an agitation, he added.

Despite Manipur having a rich native language, students are forced to study in other languages, he said and emphasised that promoting "our language" is the responsibility of all.

He also said that the Government's alleged suppression of the Manipuri language which is included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution is akin to the colonial policies of the British.

Further stating that the National Education Policy 2020 advocates education in one's mother tongue, Sundar maintained that this provision, however, is yet to be implemented in Manipur.

He said the MSF will continue the protest at various schools, seeking support from the people.
