Inmates of a relief camp opened at Biramangol College, Sawombung have been given special job cards and work under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) today.
The special job cards were given to the inmates.
Hailing from Gwaltabi, Sanasabi, Shanti Khongbal and Yaingangpokpi, they have been staying at the relief camp opened at the camp.
Under the MGNREGS, they planted 200 saplings.
The initiative and work were supervised by the Block Development Officer of Imphal East-1 CD Block, Sawombung under the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department.
Block Development Officer P Kherdananda said the inmates were given the special job cards to provide them livelihood amid the current conflict.
The initiative was taken following the advice of RD Minister Yumnam Khemchand.
The job card holders will be paid Rs 260 each per day.
This small amount will not be enough to sustain them but it will help them somewhat in coping with their daily needs amid the current tension that has taken away means of earning livelihood from them, he said.
The inmates thanked the authorities concerned for giving them job cards.
They said they want more such schemes for all the people who have been displaced by the conflict.
