Imphal, August 08 2023:
Veteran politician Okram Joy has asked why the Manipur Government and the State Assembly are still not taking any action against the 10 Kuki MLAs who demanded separate administration for the people they represent.
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club today, O Joy continued that the demand being raised by the 10 Kuki MLAs is against the ethical conduct of the Assembly as they have taken a pledge to protect Manipur and work on development of the State.
The veteran politician also accused the 10 Kuki MLAs of provoking the violence in Manipur to spiral out of control.
Saying that he had written to the Speaker of the State Assembly to take action against the 10 Kuki MLAs on May 18, O Joy continued that a similar complaint was also sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 24, the copies of which were also forwarded to the Speaker of Lok Sabha, Speaker of Manipur Assembly and the Chief Minister.
Continuing that a reply to his complaint was sent by the Prime Minister Office (PMO) to the Chief Secretary on May 31, O Joy maintained that he, however, got the copy of the reply only yesterday.
There however is no reply from the Speaker, he added.
He further said that PMO directed the Chief Secretary to take up action which he deems fit on separate administration issues and to upload and send the reply to PMOPG portal and the petitioner.
Asking why the State Government is still not taking any action despite getting a specific direction from the PMO, he said that the Speaker not even sending any reply to him let alone taking action against the 10 Chin-Kuki MLAs is questionable.
O Joy conveyed that he however has been invited to attend the meeting of the Committee on Privileges and Ethics of the State Assembly which will be convened on August 10 .
Maintaining that he had written to the Chief Secretary today seeking response for the action taken up by the State so far after he received the letter from the PMO, O Joy said that he also had apprised the PMO about the failure of the Government to take action against the 10 Kuki MLAs.
He also asked if there is any reason why the Government is unable to discipline the 10 Kuki MLAs who engaged in conduct unethical to the House.
Any member can raise a privilege motion on the floor of the House or the Assembly Secretary can file a report pertaining to the separate administration demand, O Joy said and asked why none from the 50 MLAs raise any motion when the 10 Kuki MLAs have openly advocated disintegration of Manipur.
Former MLAs Dr Ng Bijoy and RK Anand also attended the press briefing.
