Imphal, August 08 2023:
In a major development amid the widespread demand to withdraw Assam Rifles from sensitive areas of strife-torn Manipur, the State police have taken up a suo-moto case against 9th Assam Rifles on the charge of causing obstruction in discharging their 'law bound duty' .
According to police, the incident took place near Kutub Wali Masjid at Kwakta Ward no 8 along Pholjang Road in Bishnupur on August 5 at around 6.30 am and the case was also registered on the same day at Phougak-chao Ikhai police station.
The informant of the case is Sub-Inspector N Devdas Singh, in-charge OC of Phougakchao Ikhai police station while investigation will be done by ASI Md Ziaulhaque of the same station, as per police.
Saying that a team of Bishnupur commandos led by its SP proceeded towards Pholjang road along Kwakta Ward no 8 on August 5 morning to conduct a search operation as a follow up action of an Arms Act case to trace Kuki militants who might have taken shelter at the adjoining area between Kwakta and Pholjang villages, the police said their personnel were stopped and blocked by the 9th Assam Rifles near Kutub Wali Masjid by parking their casper vehicle in the middle of the road.
The police further said that the 'arrogant' act of the personnel of 9th Assam Rifles not only obstructed the police team in discharging their law bound duty but also gave a chance to the Kuki militants to escape to safer places.
