Karkinos Healthcare Manipur organises awareness session

Urging the people of Manipur to quit tobacco to defeat cancer, Karkinos Manipur Cancer Institute and Research Centre organized an awareness session about different types of head and neck cancers, their symptoms and preventive measures at the premises of the hospital at JNIMS Campus, 25 � Soibam Leikai, Porompat, Imphal East.
According to a statement issued by Karkinos Healthcare Manipur, the session highlighted the importance of screening cum early detection in the general public on World Head and Neck Cancer Day.

Dr RK Gautamjit, Consultant-Head and Neck Oncosurgery, Karkinos Manipur Cancer Institute and Research Centre said, "Prevention and early detection are the best line of defence against the cancer menace" .
"To make sure cancer patients get correct and timely consultation, we organize regular cancer awareness programmes to sensitize the people of Manipur, he added.
It may be noted that head and neck cancer is the term given to cancers that develop in the head and neck region - mouth, nose and sinuses, salivary glands, and throat and voice box (larynx).
Individuals known to have an increased risk of head and neck cancer have a history of smoking, chewing tobacco or betel nut or drinking alcohol.
Men are two to three times more likely than women to develop head and neck cancer.
These cancers are more common in people over the age of 50 .
Cancers of head & neck are a significant problem in the country constituting approximately one-third of all cancer cases.
It accounts for 30-40 % of all cancers in male and 11-16% of all cancers in female.
Annually over 200,000 cases of head & neck cancers occur in India out of which almost 80,000 are oral cancers.
Even though maximum numbers of mouth cancers in males is seen after the age of 50, there is an alarming increasing trend towards younger patient population.
Tobacco remains the number one lifestyle behaviour responsible for the persistent high incidence of oral and pharyngeal cancers.
