Suspected UNC blockade supporters burn two trucks

Imphal, October 04 2011: Suspected blockade supporters of UNC today torched two loaded trucks along the NH 37 at two areas between Oinamlong to Santi Khunou and Awang Khun to Irang Khun under Tousem Police Station even as another loaded truck fell down a gorge at an area between New Keiphundai to Maku Bridge injuring the driver and the handyman.

Meanwhile, a blockade supporter who pelted stones at the column of loaded trucks was arrested by Police Commandos.

According to police source, around 1270 loaded trucks including petroleum tankers headed for Imphal under tight security escort on Monday.

Unfortunately, the suspected blockade supporters who were hiding along the road set fire to the trucks at around 7.30 pm Tuesday advantage of security loopholes since it was travelling almost alone at the end of the column with security escorts and some other trucks far behind it.

Most of the hoods of the truck were burnt in the arson act while its tyres were safe.

The other truck was also burnt down by suspected UNC blockade supporters at an area between Awang Khun and Irang Khun today morning at around 6.30 am.

Meanwhile, a cement laden truck has fallen down a deep gorge at an area between New Keiphundai and Maku Bridge leaving the driver and the handyman injured.

They were rushed to Silchar hospital for treatment.

Most of the cements bags which the truck was ferrying were lost after the truck fell down the gorge.

The driver was identified as one Koireng from Yairipok while the ill fated truck is owned by one Tomba from Yairipok In another incident, Imphal East Commandos today arrested one blockade supporter of SHDDC from Koireng Lamkhai area for pelting stones at a column of loaded trucks.

He was identified as Rengmang Koireng (25) son of late Soson Koireng from Kotlein Mamang Koireng Lamkhai.

He has been handed over to Patsoi Police Station.

Meanwhile 282 loaded trucks out of the 1270 trucks which left Jiribam yesterday has reached Imphal safely.

Out of them there were 33 petrol tankers, 60 diesel tankers, 13 bullet tankers and 173 trucks with other essential commodities.

According to sources, rice stocks in Jiribam FIC storehouse have been depleted and ferrying in of rice has been stopped since some days back.
