Bird traps seized

Joint Coordination Committee on Wildlife & Biodiversity (JCCWB) Manipur along with Pumlen Lake Development Organisation, Manipur Bird Club, Sangai Protection Forum and Wildlife Activist, Moirangthem Open seized 20 bird traps and rescue a bird while taking out a drive to check poaching ofbirds today at Arong Khunou, Komlakhong, Phaobakchao, Sekmaijin Khunou, Wabagai Terapishak, Wabagai Lamkhai areas.
Speaking in this connection, JCCWB convemor Romesh Ningthoujam said that even though awareness is carried to stop poaching of birds using nets, the trapping of birds using nets is still prevailing in some areas.
If these wild birds wreak havoc on farms, the farm owners can contact JCCWB, so that prevention measures could be taken up and benefits can be availed from JCCWB for the affected fields.
However, if the farm owner chooses to trap or kill birds, they are liable for punishment under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, said Romesh.
He also called for collective effort to protect and preserve wild animals and birds from extinction considering the impact it would cause to the ecology if it became extinct.
