UNC slams Dy CM Gaikhangam

Senapati, April 30 2015 : United Naga Council (UNC) on Thursday slammed Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam for his statement criticising the activities of the UNC and even the NSCN (IM) .

In a press release, the UNC while referring to the Deputy CM's statement said Gaikhangam should understand the "ground reality instead of spreading false propaganda" against UNC.

The council reminded that UNC is the apex civil body created by Tribe Hohos which had no role to play in "threatening or issuing of diktats" to any individual or group.

The 2010 Naga People's convention (NPC) declared the ADC election as "null and void" and UNC stood by the decision to abstain from any form of political participation, said a report by the Hornbill Express.

UNC reminded that it was people's mandate that those "unwanted ADC members" will not be allowed to hold any political or social status.

The council said it would welcome the ADC members back to mainstream and that the ADC members will not be allowed to contest the upcoming 2015 ADC election.

On the issue of some Congress ADC members joining the BJP, UNC countered Gaikhangam stating that any decision by those "political traitors" (present ADC members) to shift their camps had nothing do with UNC.

The council instead said that the "communal and divisive" State Government should reconsider repressive policies against the Nagas and tribes of Manipur.

It may be recalled that on Wednesday, Gaikhangam challenged the diktat by NSCN (IM) and UNC against all aspiring Congress candidates for the ensuing Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections and pledged that the State Government will counter any subversive attempt by the outfit and the Naga body to disrupt the election process.

The Deputy CM made the vituperative statement against NSCN (IM) and UNC following reports that these two groups had imposed a ban on all Congress party aspiring candidates from contesting the forthcoming ADC elections.

Meanwhile, UNC has also acknowledged the massive public support it received during the 48-hour total bandh in the Naga inhabited areas.

According to the Hornbill Express, the democratic agitation passed off peacefully.

While warning of more intensified agitations if the aspirations of the Nagas are not fulfilled, UNC appealed to the Government of India to expedite the process of granting an Alternative Arrangement pending Indo-Naga Peace process.
