Sword Vashum elected new TNL president

Ukhrul, May 22 2024:
Retired Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IAAS) officer Sword Vashum has been elected as the new president of Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) for the 2024- 2028 tenure following the presidential election of the apex customary body held at TNL conference hall in Viewland at Ukhrul town today.
With four candidates in the fray, a huge voter turnout was witnessed today from all Tangkhul villages.
A total of 660 votes were cast out of the total number of 731 registered TNL Minganin (representatives) .
The 74 year-old Sword Vashum received 277 votes and defeated the other three presidential candidates.
He got 43 more votes than the second place candidate, KYS Yangmi, who received 234 votes.

SA Ramnganing secured 112 votes and Vareishang Zingkhai ended with "double digits" and 19 invalid votes as per the poll results.
It might be mentioned that Sword Vashum hails from Talui village in Western Ukhrul and will be the 28th president of the Tangkhul Naga Long.
The supporters and well-wishers of Vashum erupted in celebration after the announcement of the results at around 5.30 pm.
During the distribution of election certificates, the newly elected president expressed his gratitude to the TNL Election Commission for the peaceful and successful conduct of the TNL presidential election.
He also sought the support of the people while assuring to uphold his commitment to the people.
Later, the TNL president-elect was escorted by a crowd of people led by headmen and others from TNL office till his residence at Viewland.
An official source from TNL informed that the oath-taking and handing-over ceremony for the president-elect will be held within 10 days of the result declaration as per TNL Riyan.
Notably, the post of TNL president had been lying vacant since David Kashung tendered his resignation from the position in February, 2024 .
