Lamka, July 09:
The eastern canal of Khuga Multipurpose Project breached during a trial run about 3.1 kms from the dam site on Sunday night, washing away a fishpond and partially submerging a paddy field.
The water on the eastern canal, according to locals, has spread out to over a distance of 4 kms on Sunday when a concrete slab of another canal over which the Khuga canal was built caved in under the pressure of the volume of the water at around 9 pm.
A fishpond about the size of one sanggam was completely washed away by the flood forming a crater of about 4 sq feet.

Official sources said the canal breached because of seepage on the concrete slab that was built over another canal.
The department has begun repairing the canal today.
It is likely that the repairing work will take sometime as 10/20 feet of earth over the concrete slab will have to be removed to assess the damage and repairing thereof.
Ngamkhopao Mate of M Shemuol, whose fishpond was washed away by the torrent, said he had acquired it on January and just released Rs 4000 worth of fish fingerlings in the past week.
The partially inundated field belongs to one Lamkhosei Misao of Misao Lhahvom, but unaware of his fate he had left home for his jhum field on early Monday.
Returning home later today he told this correspondent at his house that a water canal just above his field was filled with red soil, and that his field was more or less saved from the red swamp by the canal walls.
"I would be glad if the Government could clean up my water canal that has been filled by the soil brought by the surging water from Khuga canal" he said when asked of how he felt about his field being flooded by the canal water.
Meanwhile, perturbed by the collapse of the canal, Churachandpur District Students' Union (CDSU) has stated that the incident has exposed once again the sub-standard work undertaken by the Government even after spending crores of rupee on the construction of Khuga Dam.
Unless immediate corrective measure is taken up, the dam and its canal will only be like a time bomb simply ticking away to explode anytime, the student body said.
