Imphal, June 07 2025:
The government has ordered a five-day suspension of mobile internet and data services in five valley districts of the state starting from 11:45 pm Saturday, citing apprehensions of law and order breakdown due to the potential misuse of social media.
The order, issued by the commissioner-cum-secretary (home), stated that the suspension of mobile internet, including VSAT and VPN services, will be in force across Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts.
The move came in the wake of rising tensions and fears that anti-social elements might exploit social media platforms to spread inflammatory content, false rumours and hate speech, which could incite public unrest.
According to the official order, there is an imminent danger to life and property, and a risk of widespread disturbance to public tranquillity and communal harmony.
Authorities believe that social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), along with SMS and dongle services, could be used to transmit provocative images, videos and messages to mobilise mobs and instigate violence.
The order expressed concern that such material could lead to arson, vandalism, and other violent activities, resulting in loss of life and damage to public or private property.
In order to maintain peace, prevent escalation of tensions, and thwart the designs of anti-national and anti-social elements, the internet suspension was deemed necessary.
The suspension will remain in effect for five days, unless extended or modified.
The government may consider exemptions for specific services and users by allowing whitelisting on a case-by-case basis.
The order also warned that any individual found violating the directive will face legal consequences.
