Imphal, September 06:
Work on phase-I of the Imphal Sewerage Project which has been suspended due to onset of rainy season would resume from next month (October) and the line of trees growing along Kanglapat just in front of Raj Bhavan would be cut down to facilitate the work.
Disclosing this to The Sangai Express, an official source informed that most of the works of phase-I of the French Government funded Imphal Sewerage Project has already been completed and the remaining work would be resumed after the rainy season next month.
The areas where the remaining works would be taken up include the stretch of National Highway 39 in front of Raj Bhavan, from the point of Raj Bhavan till Keishampat, stretches of Wahengbam Leikai, Nagamapal and Thangmeiband Watham Leirak, the source said.
To facilitate resumption of the work, efforts are being made by the PHE Department to get the approval of the Forest Department in connection with cutting down the trees growing along Kanglapat in front of Raj Bhavan, the source added.
As the permission of the National Highways Authority of India would be required for digging up the National Highway stretch from Raj Bhavan side to Keishampat for laying the sewerage pipe line, the Department has also been trying to get the permission, the source disclosed, adding that the resumption of work on the remaining part of the phase-I along other roads would not be much of a problem as the said roads are under the State Government.
However, as the execution of the work from Raj Bhavan to Keishampat would require the approval of the National Highway Authority of India, work along this stretch may take some more time.
On the other hand, with frequent calling of bandhs and blockades and disturbance from some quarters, apprehensions have been expressed that the Imphal Sewerage Project may not be completed in time.
As per the agreement signed with the French Government, the project is to be completed by October next year.
However, till date the work of the phase-I has not yet been completed.
