Now SMS in Meetei Mayek

Imphal, October 17 2009: The indigenous Meetei Mayek (script) can be used in sending SMS through mobile phone, a gift of the advancement in technology.

The software for Meetei Mayek for writing SMS on mobile handset was developed by a 25 year-old Naorem Tony of Tera Lukram Leirak, a BE degree holder from the PSG College of Technology, Tamil Nadu.

With regard to his invention of the Meetei Mayek software for SMS writing, Tony told media persons in the conference room of the Hueiyen Lanpao office premise that he had developed the software with a view to replacing the writing of SMS in Bengali, Hindi and other scripts by the youths of the state, and with the objective of developing the indigenous script.

He took at least three months to develop the software.

The software can be downloaded from the website www.khunyai.com.

It can be downloaded free of cost.

He further said that the software can be fitted to mobile handsets of various brands of more than 300 series including Nokia, Sony Ericson and others used in sending SMS.

The step has been taken up on trial basis and he will welcome any suggestion if there is any problem and improvement to the newly developed software, Tony appealed.

Editor of Hueiyen Lanpao, Meetei Mayek edition, Shivadutta Luwang, who also attended the press briefing, thanked the software engineer, Tony for his innovative effort and encouraged him by expressing confidence that more sophisticated softwares will be developed by him in future.

There may be many experts in computer technology in the state, but like Tony who think of developing such software for Meetei Mayek in sending SMS through mobile is very rare.

"We must encourage his effort," Shivadutta added.

For the Meetei Mayek is the present trend is a very crucial stage as Bengali script which has been in use in Manipur for a long time is slowly replacing by the indigenous script step by step with the start of teaching it upto Standard V .

He confidently said that Meetei Mayek will be in use in mass scale.

At this point of time, there is the need of taking up advance step to transcribe the Anglo-Manipuri dictionary and other books in Bengali scripts into Meetei Mayek.

The role of present generation in this regard is very important.

Considering for the future children, transcribe of the Bengali script books is very must important, he reiterated.
