WAD demands Speedy trial

As many as 287 crimes against women and children have occurred in Manipur since the beginning of this year.
This includes six girls below ten years of age who were killed after rape.
This was stated by secretary of Women Action for Development (WAD) Mangsatabam Sobita during the press conference held at Manipur Press Club today.
During the press conference jointly organized by District Women Committee Imphal east and United NGOs Mission Manipur, the WAD secretary mentioned that out of the 287 cases of violence against women during the current year, 24 are murder cases and 61 are of assaults.
Of the 40 cases of rapes, 13 were on girls below 10 years while 27 were done on girls below 18 years.
The total number missing cases during the year is 77, out of which three were found dead.
Number of deaths under suspicious circumstances is 16, and that of molestation is 13 .
There have been 16 suicide cases pertaining to women, and 6 cases of attempt to murder in this year.
One kidnapping case, 1 cheating case, 10 sexual harassment cases and three deaths during delivery have been reported during the same period.
Referring to the recent murders of two girl students, she highlighted that the alleged culprits are said to be drug users.
Therefore, she stressed the need for monitoring the chemicals present in the drugs used by the youths of Manipur.
Expressing apprehension that some elements have been trying to destroy the Manipur society by intruding various forms of drugs, Sobita appealed to the government to come out with stringent action against the perpetrators of crimes against women.
The WAD also demanded speedy trial and legislative amendments to deal with crimes against women and children, while soliciting the cooperation of the people in this regard.
Meanwhile, Andro assembly constituency MLA Th Shyamkumar, at a press meet held at his official quarters today, said that swift action and punishment against the criminals would help reduce crimes against women in Manipur.
He also stressed the need for including moral science education as a compulsory subject for school students so as to bring about good moral among the youths.
