MU opens Live Germplasm Resource Centre for fish conservation

Imphal, May 06 2026:
Manipur University on Wednesday opened a Live Germplasm Resource Centre to conserve endemic fish species of the State and the Northeast.
The centre, set up by the Department of Zoology in collaboration with ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, was inaugurated near the Mahseer Hatchery on the western side of the MU campus.
MU Vice Chancellor Prof Naorem Lokendra Singh was the chief guest.
Dr Rameshori Yumnam, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, coordinated the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Lokendra said Manipur, a "lacustrine State" in a global biodiversity hotspot, has rich fish diversity and traditional aquaculture knowledge.
"The centre is a significant step towards conserving aquatic biodiversity.
It will also boost the fisheries sector and contribute to the State's economic growth", he said.
The centre will work on conservation and sustainable management of aquatic genetic resources, with focus on indigenous fish species.
It will support research, promote sustainable aquaculture and build capacity for managing fish resources.
