RIMS observes World ORS Day; ORS Week concludes at ACME Centre

The Department of Community Medicine, RIMS, Imphal, organized the observance of World ORS Day 2025 today in association with Yurembam Apunba Club at the Community Hall of Yurembam Awang Leikai, Imphal West.
The ceremony was held under the "A Simple Solution for a Healthier Future - SIP Smart, Stay Strong: Say Yes to ORS", as per a press statement.
Ngasepam Raghu Meitei, president of Yurembam Apunba Club and Helenchandra Laishram, secretary, graced the event as chief guest and president respectively, sharing the dais with Professor Shantibala Kongjengbam, Head of the Department of Community Medicine, RIMS, Imphal, (Organizing Chairperson), and Professor H Sanayaima Devi (Organizing Secretary).
The programme focused on raising awareness about the life-saving benefits of ORS and Zinc in preventing dehydration from diarrhoeal diseases, especially in children.
The event saw active participation from local residents, community leaders, students, Anganwadi workers, and ASHAs.
Faculty, residents, and students from the Department of Community Medicine, RIMS, delivered educational talks, conducted live ORS preparation demos, and distributed free ORS and Zinc packets, along with posters and leaflets.
The event also emphasized the importance of safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene.
Separately, the closing programme of ORS Week was held today at the auditorium hall of ACME Fertility and Health Care Centre Hiyang Hiren Leirak, Konung Lampak this afternoon.
It was organised by the Pediatrics Association of Manipur (PAM).
Speaking as the chief guest, Dr James Elangbam, Managing Director of ACME advised the public to administer Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and to never take antibiotics in case of diarrhoea.
He said that 60% of the human body is composed of water, fluids and electrolytes.
When these fluids are lost, it is essential to replace them.
As most types of diarrhoea are mostly caused by viruses, he advised against taking antibiotics as they are prescribed for bacterial infections and strongly advocated for the use of ORS as treatment.
At the event, Dr Meenakshi Moirangthem, consultant paediatrician, ACME, spoke at length about the topic "Diarrhoea in children" and demonstrated how to make and administer ORS.
Other dignitaries present at the event include Professor Dr N Kameshore, HoD, JNIMS and president elect of East Zone Academy of Pediatrics; Dr Konjengbam Mrinalini, Medical Superintendent, ACME; Dr Monika Naorem, consultant anesthesiologist and Dr Longjam Basanta, secretary, PAM .
