Ukhrul witnesses large scale slaughtering of dogs

Ukhrul, July 24 2013: Even though the Veterinary Department has taken up the mass anti-rabies vaccination drive in almost the whole of Ukhrul district, rabies fear stalked the people here resulting in mass killing of dogs.

However, no casualty due to rabies has been reported in the district so far.

When contacted, the District Veterinary Officer, Dr Ngahorshai said that anti-rabies vaccination programme was launched in the district on June 13 following the reported outbreak of the disease.

More than 1500 dogs were administered vaccination by the Dept, the Veterinary officer said while adding that there is no need for panic or fear the disease.

Pointing out that dog bite is curable, Dr Ngahorshai said a dog bite victim should be rushed immediately to doctors instead of treating with local medication.

The symptoms of the mad dog are blood shot eye, simply attacking on its way, not sparing the owner.

Dr Ngahorshai added that 1750 doses of anti-rabies vaccine have been already stocked by the Dept.

While conducting a survey to ascertain the reason for mass killing of dogs, it has been learnt that most of the dog owners killed their pets fearing a fine of Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh to be imposed on them if their pets claimed casualty.

They have an apprehension that the vaccine could not possibly prevent the rabies.

As a result, only four dogs are spared at a village in the district.

Another possible reason for extensive killing of dogs could be the tempting taste of the meat, one of the favourite tribal dishes.

Meanwhile, the Dept concerned informed all dog owners that the anti-rabies vaccination is a must for safety.

Below three months pups and sick dogs should not be given anti-rabies vaccination, the officials said while also suggesting tetanus injection to dog bite victims for antiseptic.
