Imphal, May 06 2026:
Rampant deforestation in the surrounding hill ranges of Nongpok Heirok in Imphal East district has left paddy fields without irrigation water, Nongpok Heirok Development Committee president T Gocha said on Wednesday.
He said villagers will work with the Forest Department to plant trees in the hill ranges.
Gocha was speaking at an awareness programme on forest conservation in the Nongpok Heirok Development Protected Area, organised by the Nongpok Heirok Development Committee with local clubs and Meira Paibi.
"Mass felling of trees from Kongjangdong to Ngarou Chingjen Chingyang, and from Maringlok Chingdol to Sinda Chingdol, has turned once double-cropped fields of Nongpok Heirok into wasteland", he said.
Gocha said the conservation drive will be taken up under Darbar Resolution No 10A/7/1932-1933 of the Manipur State Gazette dated June 5, 1933 .
The resolution bans felling trees, hunting, and digging of hills in the area.
The committee will enforce the ban and start afforestation in the two hill ranges surrounding the village, he added.
Custom secretary of Utra Shanglen Sanahal, forest activist N Phulindro, Nongmaijing Range RO Robarthson and Thoubal Range RO Denesh attended the programme.
