Aggrieved transporters stage protest against illegal taxation

Frustrated by excessive extortion in the form of illegal taxes along the Imphal-Moreh Road, members of Imphal Moreh Transport Association (IMTA) staged a sit-in protest at Lamkang Centre along the Pallel-Chandel Road today.
Notably, IMTA had launched an indefinite bandh of the Imphal-Moreh Road from July 24 in opposition to frequent and unbearable imposition of illegal taxes on their service vehicles and confiscation of their possessions in the name of "tax" .
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Kt Ruwngam, president.
IMTA gave an account of the hardships faced by the transporters who ply along the Imphal-Moreh Road to earn their livelihood.
Due to frequent illegal tax collection, they have started losing more money than they earn and as a result, the indefinite bandh was launched from July 24 along with today's protest demonstration, he said.
Highlighting their demands.
he made an appeal against collection of illegal taxes from the service vehicles plying along the Imphal-Moreh Road.
He also called for a reduction on the taxes imposed along this route as well as the number of toll booths.
Addressing the issue of the tax collectors confiscating drivers' belongings, he made an appeal for their belongings to be returned while simultaneously demanding respect, security and safety for truck drivers who work in service of the public.
Kt Ruwngam sought the public cooperation in their protest while maintaining that IMTA had finally decided to protest as the illegal taxes and extortion were becoming unbearable.
