Imphal, May 06 2026:
The Manipur State Commission for Women, in collaboration with Manipur Central Jail, organised a legal awareness programme for women inmates at Central Jail, Imphal on Wednesday.
The programme focused on legal rights, grievance redressal and mental well-being.
Speaking on the occasion, MSCW Chairperson Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang said the commission visited the jail to interact directly with inmates and assess their living conditions.
"The purpose was to hear their grievances firsthand and take up appropriate matters with the Government through necessary recommendations", she said.
Monsang asked inmates to report any mistreatment by jail staff, including verbal abuse or sexual harassment.
"Such matters will be taken seriously and addressed", she assured.
She said the commission remains committed to the mental health of inmates who have limited contact with the outside world.
MSCW Member Secretary W Phajatombi Devi urged inmates to raise issues related to basic amenities.
"Share problems regarding water-supply, electricity and healthcare.
The commission will approach the departments concerned for redressal", she said.
Phajaton also advised inmates to clarify doubts about their legal rights and provisions of law.
She said regular yoga and meditation can help maintain a calm state of mind.
Superintendent of Police (Jail) SK Bhadrika said women inmates are provided adequate and nutritious food.
"Their health and hygiene are closely monitored to prevent any serious concerns," he said.
Bhadrika said the jail has communication facilities for inmates, including provisions for foreign nationals to contact their families.
He added that MSCW has been actively engaging with inmates and had earlier organised a health camp at the jail.
The programme included two technical sessions.
Advocate Rajkishore Thiyam spoke on "Educating Inmates on Their Rights", covering arrest procedures, bail provisions and access to legal aid.
Advocate Santa Khaidem discussed "Rights of Pregnant' and Nursing Mothers, and Specific Arrest and Detention Laws", including facilities mandated under the law.
Yoga trainer Indubala Mayanglambam conducted a demonstration of basic yoga and meditation techniques.
MSCW Member Sk Sophia, jail officials and staff attended the programme.
Central Jail Imphal currently houses women undertrials and convicts, including foreign nationals.
Officials said such programmes are part of ongoing efforts to ensure legal access and welfare for inmates.
