Thoubal Police firing victim succumbs

Imphal, December 02 2012: Fifty nine-year-old Huirongbam Manichandra of Thoubal Wangma Taba, who was hurt in yesterday's police firing to control agitated protestors over the killing of death Yanglem Naoba alias Bisheswor, succumbed to the injuries at Shija Hospital at around 7 am today.

Manichandra was hit by a bullet on his belly in police firing during a confrontation between the police and the protestors demanding justice over the death of Naoba, a shopkeeper, who was found shot dead within hours of leaving home for his shop on Friday morning.

Manichandra left behind his wife and two sons.

Soon after the news of death of Manichandra reached, the already charged atmosphere in Thoubal district, where prohibitory order was clamped since late this morning, became really volatile with protestors in large number coming out to enforce bandh along with burning of tyres, piling of logs on the roads and stoning of commuters who came out in defiance of the indefinite bandh called by the JAC Against the murder of Yanglem Naoba since Saturday.

The JAC called a public meeting at Thoubal at around 9:30 am today.

Wife of the Chief Minister MLA O Landhoni turned up along with Government spokesperson Minister Moirangthem Okendro and MLA of Wangjing Tentha A Brojen in the meeting to calm the irate public.

While MLA Landhoni was appealing to the gathering to suspend their agitation while assuring that the injured Manichandra would be taken care of by the government, someone in the meeting broke the news of Manichandra's succumbing to his injuries.

At this turn, the public attending the meeting erupted in anger and the meeting could not proceed further.

Intense agitations were witnessed in various places of Thoubal district after 10 am, leaving no option for the district administration but to clamp CrPC 144 as a pre-emptive measure to prevent furthermore unwanted incidents.

Thoubal bazar, Thoubal Mela Ground, Thoubal Moijing, Thoubal Ningombam, Thoubal Kyam Siphai are some of the places where intense agitations were witnessed.

Even at this degree of protest, not a single tear gas shell or rubber bullet was used by the police today.

In many places, the protestors were seen engaging in pitch battles with the police.

There has also been another bandh in protest against disappearance of Nitin Masih, a resident of Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

These two bandhs have brought normal activities in the district to a grinding halt.

Meanwhile, the JAC of Nitin Masih has extended its bandh for another 12 hours.

The JAC has also warned of imposing indefinite bandh along Imphal-Moreh Road from December 4 if Nitin is not released by evening tomorrow.

Nitin is a native of Indore in MP.

He was reported missing since November 24 evening from his wife's village Kakching Pallel Lamkhai in Thoubal district.
