Imphal, July 23: Strongly protesting the assault of two men by personnel of Manipur Rifles today at about 2.30 pm at Tadubi, enraged people of the area have stopped all goods carriers coming from Dimapur at Tadubi with effect from today evening.

The blockade will continue until action is taken up against the security personnel involved in the assault.

Speaking to the press, a source said that the personnel of 8 MR proceeded towards Mao today in eight vehicles to escort oil tankers to Imphal.

At about 2.30 pm, a Maruti Alto car came from Mao and while nearing Tadubi, one of the vehicles of the MR personnel grazed the side of the car.

Thereafter a heated argument ensued between the occupants of the car and the MR personnel said the source and added that after some time, the Alto car proceeded towards Tadubi.

Incensed over the heated exchange of words, three vehicles of the 8 vehicle convoy of the MR personnel turned back towards Tadubi.

On reaching Tadubi, the MR personnel then severely thrashed the two occupants of the car, said the source and added that they were later taken to Mao police station.

Soon a huge crowd of people from Tadubi came to Mao police station and demanded to know why the two were assaulted so severely.

The crowd also broke the windshield of three vehicles of the MR personnel, said the source.

Later the incensed people stopped all goods carrying vehicles at Tadubi at about 5.30 pm and refused to let them go demanding action against the personnel involved in the assault.

To control the situation, the MR personnel opened blank fire and managed to drive the crowd away, said the source further.

The people also demanded that the SP of Senapati police come to Mao PS.

The two assaulted men have been identified as Saheni Khuni and Adani.
