International Biodiversity Day observed

As observed across the globe, the Department of Zoology, Manipur University, Canchipur celebrated International Biodiversity Day on the theme, "Be part of the Plan" at the varsity today.
The inaugural programme was graced by Prof GKN Chhettry, Dean, School of Life Sciences, MU; Dr Pramod Kumar Pandey, Director, ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research, Bhimtal; Prof M Damayanti Devi, Head, Department of Botany and Prof N Mohilal Meitei, Director, College Development Council, MU as presidium members, said a release.
The programme began with a welcome address delivered by Dr Shivakumar Vijayaragha-valu, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology.
At the event, Dr Tourangbam Brajakumar Singh, Director, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur, delivered a talk on the topic, "Climate Change Risks".
The Director emphasized on the impact of climate change supported by scientific data and literature.
The students of the University were also sensitized about the importance of biodiversity conservation with a carry home message - "To become stewards of the environment, advocates for conservation efforts and take an active role in raising awareness about this pressing issue".
The dignitaries also emphasised on the conservation and sustainable utilisation of bio-resources, as Manipur being situated in a Biodiversity Hotspot.
The inaugural programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr Rameshori Yumnam.

In connection with the observance, the Department also organised events like Painting and Extempore Speech Competitions on the themes related to Biodiversity wherein students from various Departments of the University participated.
