Imphal, January 21 2015:
People for Animals, Manipur conveyed its deep appreciation to the staff of Veterinary Office, Churachandpur for their efforts and dedication in controlling the current rabies outbreak.
According to a statement, members of PFA, Hollen Dog Training Centre and Manipur Dog Lovers' Club went to Churachanpur recently to assist the staff in their works.
The members participated in vaccination programmes held at various villages of Churachandpur.
They were happy to see many dog owners extending their cooperation to the programme.
They were also moved on seeing many little children bringing their dogs and standing in the queue.
Many women also brought their dogs carrying like babies wrapped with clothes.
The team was also shocked to learn that there are also some villages where all the dogs were killed under the orders of village headmen.
Some owners brought very young puppies whose mothers have been killed.
In spite of inadequate staff, the official team worked day and night.
It is also learnt that the Veterinary Dept is understaffed.
There are 45 staff against the sanctioned strength of 111 veterinary officers.
This is the main drawback during the outbreak of such diseases.
The PFA statement also censured the statement of Phungzathang Tonsing, Minister Health and Family Welfare who allegedly mocked that stray dogs should be killed and asked whether Maneka Sanjay Gandhi can take the responsibilities for human casualties.
"PFA and animal lovers do not expect such words from a responsible leader," it said.
PFA also warned food vendors, dog traders, transporters and owners not to sell or buy dog for meat.
They will be booked under Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act and Food Safety and Standard Act.
It further appealed to the State police to check transportation of dog for meat.
Dog meat trading is the main reason for spreading the infection.
People are appealed to informed PFA on mobile numbers 9862107063/9615940944 regarding bulk trading of dogs for meat.
