National Science seminar begins at MU

Imphal, January 21 2015: A 3-day National seminar on science and technology for human development jointly organised by Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), Imphal Chapter and Manipur University in collaboration with Indian Science Congress Association, Kolkata began today at the Court Room, Vice Chancellor's office, Manipur University.

The inaugural function was attended by Professor HNK Sarma, Vice Chancellor, Manipur University; Professor Arun Kumar, general secretary, ISCA; Professor Ashok K Saxena, general president 103rd ISCA; Professor Asha Gupta, organising secretary, National seminar and Dr VL Saxena, executive member, ISCA as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.

In his chief guest speech, Professor HNK Sarma said that the seminar would provide a vibrant platform for eminent scientists, researchers and students from Manipur and outside the State to come together and exchange their ideas and views on the vital role of science and technology for human development.

It will be useful in developing a scientific temperament among the young generation.

In his presidential speech, Professor Arun Kumar noted that the science seminar has been a part of the academic life in India since 1913.It has always been an occasion for showcasing the latest developments in the field of science and technology.

He also exuded confidence that the seminar will prove to be an exciting and enriching experience for one and all.

Professor Ashok K Saxena said that in India, science and technology has been used in promoting research and development as cutting edge technology on the one hand and to serve the technological requirement of appropriate skills and technology on the other.

However, benefit of science and technology has not yet reached socially excluded and marginalised people.

In her keynote address, Professor Asha Gupta, mentioned that the seminar attempts to bring together scientists, researchers, technologists, women scientists and policy makers to bring innovative ideas to meaningful knowledge and discoveries.

A photo exhibition is also arranged to showcase the creative talent of Manipur youths.

As part of the seminar, a souvenir and abstract of the seminar was released by Dr VL Saxena.

Umakanta Memorial Award was also presented to VK Bubey, associate professor, IIT, Gawahati.

The award carries a cash amount of Rs 4000 and a citation.

Various resource persons including young scientists and women scientists will present papers in different fields of science and technology.

CM Okram Ibobi Singh will attend the valedictory function on Jan 23 .
