Thoubal, July 21 2026:
Arts students of Thoubal College, in association with the Students' Union of the college, staged a protest demonstration at the college gate on Tuesday, demanding the introduction of Honours with Degree courses for the fourth year (seventh and eighth semesters) under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 .
The protesting students held placards raising several demands, including the introduction of fourth-year Honours with Degree courses in the Arts stream, particularly in Manipuri and English, deployment of adequate teaching staff and implementation of the fourthyear undergraduate programme.
They also urged the Education Commissioner and Director concerned to take immediate steps to address their grievances.
Speaking in connection with the protest, Students' Union general secretary Ningthoujam Vaspai and Priyangka Nongombam, a student who has completed the sixth semester and is preparing to pursue the fourth year, said NEP 2020 had been introduced at Thoubal College from the 2022-23 academic session.
However, the absence of the required Arts departments and fourth-year Honours with Degree courses has left students dissatisfied, they said.
They claimed that the Students' Union had submitted several applications through the college principal to the concerned authorities, including the Director, seeking the introduction of the fourth-year programme, but no positive response had been received so far.
The students said those who have completed the sixth semester in subjects such as English and Manipuri are particularly affected as they are eagerly waiting to continue their fourth year.
They appealed to the State Government and concerned education authorities to take immediate measures to introduce fourth-year Honours with Degree courses for Arts students at Thoubal College under NEP 2020 .
