World Food Safety Day observed

As observed across the globe, World Food Safety Day, 2024, was celebrated today at the auditorium of Central Agricultural University (CAU), Iroisemba on the theme, "Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected" .
The event was organised by Food Safety Administration, Health Department, Government of Manipur in collaboration with College of Food Technology, CAU, Imphal.
It was graced by Health and Information & Public Relations (IPR) Minister, Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh; Health Services, Director, Dr O Sanahanbi Devi and College of Food Technology, CAU, Imphal, Dean, Prof Ng Iboyaima Singh as presidium members.
Officials of Health and Food Safety Department, faculties, staff and students of CAU also attended the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh said that World Food Safety Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness about the importance of food safety and promote actions to prevent, detect, and manage foodbome risks.
"The day highlights the critical role that food safety plays in ensuring that everyone has access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food", said Dr Sapam Ranjan while adding that food safety is critical in everyday life and around 200 diseases arise from consuming unsafe & contaminated foods.
The Minister assured that the Health Department is taking responsibility for the circulation of nutritional and safe food products to the public.
He cautioned that mass cooking and mass gathering while consuming food is unsafe and may lead to an outbreak of many diseases.
Dr Sapam Ranjan also shared that with an objective to prevent selling of unsafe & damaged food items to the public, the Department conducted a drive and inspected flood damaged grocery-stores in different places.
Stressing on the importance of spreading awareness about food safety, the Minister added, "It is our right as a citizen to eat the right and nutritious food.
From farm to consumers, the chain has to be monitored and the products need to be examined to ensure it is safe for consumption" .
Screening of a video titled, "Food Safety: Food Business Operators Perspective" and distribution of prizes to winners of the quiz competition conducted in connection with World Food Safety Day were the other highlights of the event.
