Shija assists Agartala Hospital perform kidney transplant

Imphal, November 12 2024: Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (SHRI) has assisted AGMC & GB Pant Hospital, Agartala successfully perform a kidney transplant on November 11 .

The transplant was the second for the AGMC & GB Pant Hospital, Agartala.

"Shija hospital expresses sincere gratitude for this significant milestone in Tripura's healthcare and is honoured to have supported this achievement," said the hospital congratulating the AGMC & GB Pant Hospital and Government of Agartala.

A team of 10 specialists from Shija Hospitals collaborated with the dedicated medical team at AGMC & GBP Hospital to assist in this surgery, marking a significant advancement for kidney transplant programmes in the region.

In the surgery, a 28-year-old male received a kidney from a close relative.

Post-surgery reports show that his creatinine levels had stabilized, and his urine output was found satisfactory, said the Shija Hospital.

Dr Somorendro Paonam, Consultant Urologist, Shija Hospitals & Research Institute, has expressed Shija Hospitals' commitment to empowering AGMC's nephrologists and urologists to perform independent kidney transplants in the near future, with a focus on developing cadaveric transplant protocol to meet Tripura's growing need for donors.

Shija Hospitals remains fully prepared to provide all necessary support in terms of expertise, technology, and manpower, along with awareness and training initiatives in partnership with the MOHAN Foundation to promote organ donation, he said.

Since 2016, Shija Hospitals has been a pioneer in kidney transplantation advancements in North East India.

Key milestones include the region's first ABO-incompatible transplant in October 2021 and the first deceased donor transplant in August 2023 .

With 115 kidney transplants completed to date, including three from deceased donors, Shija Hospitals remains committed to sharing its expertise and delivering high-quality kidney care to the region, said the hospital.

"Shija Hospitals remains committed to mentoring and supporting the AGMC & GB Pant Hospital team until they achieve full independence in performing kidney transplants.
