Imphal, May 11 2009:
Kangpokpi Urban Town Committee has drawn the attention of the State Government to look into the drinking water problem being faced in the township.
A press statement of the committee said that inspite of abundant natural water sources, Kangpokpi has been facing man-made shortage of drinking water every year during February to April.
People have to shell out an huge amount of money or have to walk an distance of around 2 km in an average to fetch water.
The statement further said that in 2003, Rs 3.2 crore was earmarked for the Kakngpokpi water supply scheme, but a major part of the amount was later diverted to other project as the scheme could not be completed.
As the present Toribari scheme is constructed at relatively lower area of the township, the scheme is also not likely to cover the whole town, the statement said and added that the slow progress in the construction has become a major concern as well.
