Kakching, January 08 2025:
A sit-in protest was staged at Tokpaching Keithel today urging the State Government to initiate the cleaning of Pumlen Pat, which is shrinking owing to increased siltation.
The protest was jointly organised by Pumlen Lake Development Organisation (PLDO) and All Tokpaching Meira Paibi Welfare Association (ATMPWA).
Pumlen Pat is the second largest wetland in Manipur located in Kakching district.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Haobijam Memcha, executive member, All Tokpaching Meira Paibi Welfare Association, said that more than 90% of Pumlen Pat has been clogged.
Locals have expressed worry that the wetland will ultimately disappear if proper desiltation is not undertaken swiftly, she added.
On February 20 last year, during a visit Chief Minister N Biren Singh assured to clean Pumlen Pat and restore it to its past glory by August 2023.Expressing faith in the Chief Minister's assurance, she urged the State Government to carry out prompt declogging of Pumlen Pat.
She added that locals of the 26 villages surrounding Pumlen Pat depend on it for their livelihood.
The protestors at today's demonstration wielded placards with messages such as "Save Pumlen Pat", "Desilt Pumlen Pat" and "Save Pumlen, save environment" among others.
