Imphal, July 21 2023:
Reacting to the disturbing video where two women were disrobed and paraded nude in public in broad daylight on May 4, Tera Ideal Club Tera Keithel organised a sit-in protest at Tera Keithel today and raised many slogans along with the formation of a human chain.
The protest saw a huge turnout of people who came from all areas of Patsoi Assembly Constituency to show their dissent against the inhumane act as well as to protest against narco-terrorism.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Sanasam (ongbi) Radheshyam Devi, president, Sangaiprou Apunba Nupi Lup stated that seeing the vile treatment meted out to the two women has incited a feeling of fear and disgust.
Watching the story of the two women play out in national news channels under taglines such as "Manipur Horror" has caused the people sadness and immeasurable shame.
On the other hand, Kuki militants have terrorized the innocent villagers in fringe and peripheral areas by firing guns at them, leading to injuries and many deaths.
Their acts have also taken the lives of many young people who would have been the pillars of society.
This has caused great sadness to people, she added.
However, outraging the modesty of two women is unacceptable.
All women should be respected, she asserted.
Condemning the barbaric incident, she opined that such an act may even be deserving of capital punishment.
She also urged against derailing the conflict and waylaying the efforts of the volunteers who have been working hard to protect their villages.
Stating that the people want peace, she went on to appeal to the ministers and scholars to discuss ways to restore peace in Manipur.
Placards with messages such as "Say no to narco terrorism", "Respect our mothers, sisters and daughters" and "Respect women for a strong nation" were held by the protestors today.
A banner with the words "Crush narco terrorism now, punish criminal, save women, respect women and protect children" was also hung at the protest site.
