Chandel Health Society holds tobacco-free school awareness drive

Chandel, July 21 2026: The District Tobacco Control Cell, District Health Society, Chandel, organised a one-day awareness programme on Tobacco-Free Educational Institutes at Liwachangning Government High School, Komlathabi, on Monday.

The programme was conducted under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) with the theme, "Say No to Tobacco - Choose Health, Choose Life".

Speaking on the occasion, District Nodal Officer for NTCP, Chandel, Dr Laishram Deben Singh, highlighted the harmful effects of tobacco use among young people and stressed the importance of maintaining tobacco-free school campuses to ensure the health and well-being of students.

"Students are the future of our society.

By making our schools tobacco-free, we are protecting their health and building a healthier generation," Dr Singh said.

He also urged students to become ambassadors of the tobacco-free movement in their homes and communities.

Mutum Oken Singh, Counsellor, District Hospital, Chandel, apprised the participants of key provisions under the NTCP, including the prohibition on the sale of tobacco products within 100 metres of educational institutions and the role of schools in creating a tobacco-free environment.

The programme featured interactive sessions, pledgetaking and awareness activities aimed at encouraging students to adopt healthy lifestyles.

Students, teachers and health officials actively participated in the programme, which forms part of ongoing efforts to curb tobacco consumption among youth and promote the objectives of the National Health Mission and Chandel District Health Society.
