International Music Day celebrated

The International Music Day was celebrated with musical fervour today at Priyogopalsana Auditorium, Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, (JNMDA) with the main aim to promote music in the State.
Organised by JNMDA in association with Gitanjali Performing Group of Art & Music, the function was attended by Commissioner IPR, Govt of Manipur K Radhakumar and ex- Vice-Chancellor Manipur University and also Vice-Chairman, JNMDA, Imphal Prof H Tombi as the chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
Recalling days of yore when elders used to sing folk songs, K Radhakumar, while speaking at the function, said that Sangeet Kala is one of the most important of all art forms in which one cannot step in without inborn talent and voice.
Humming a few lines of a Manipuri song titled "Nungshigi Cheina", he stated that there is a huge impact of "Western music in our culture so we need to do proper research and carve a unique place of Manipuri music in the global arena." He also called upon all concerned to protect the cultural sanctity of the land against invasion of exotic elements which is already palpable since recent times.
He further stressed the need to preserve the identity, originality and indigenousness of the culture of the land.
Prof Tombi said that the whole concept behind organising the International Music Day is to spread the awareness and importance of music to the people ever since the idea was conceived and put into actual practice in 1982 in other parts of the world.
He later said, "Human beings have always been associated with music both in days of happiness as well as sorrow as it is a part and parcel of our day to day life just like dance.
International Music Day is celebrated across 120 countries and 800 cities till date" .
Director JNMDA, L Upendro Sharma said that today's music always speaks of a fusion of diverse elements.
A light Kabui song on the theme "Punshi nunsghangnaba malem pumba yaiphanaba tollaba meeoibagidamak," �said to be sung by Rani Gaidinliu and Haipou Jadonang on every full moon day� was performed by Puiruna Golmei and party during the inaugural session today.
Students of JNMDA performed 'Kartal Cholom' and 'Pung Cholom' followed by 'Meitei Ishei' (Malem Seitharol) by Th Lansana and 'Khunung Ishei' (Moirang Sai) by A Priyarani Devi.
Troupes from Gitanjali Performing Group of Art & Music, Imphal also rendered heart-touching devotional songs during the programme.
Besides, noted singers such as Th Ibochouba Singh, S Tijendra Singh, RK Jnanranjan Singh, W Vishwanath Singh and B Netachandra Sharma presented songs during the programme.
All Manipur Music Association in collaboration with Shri Shri Bal Mukunda Dev Music College also organised World Music Day at Lamyanba Shanglen , Palace Compound today.
Art and Culture Minister L Jayantakumar Singh, All Manipur Music Association president Professor Jodhachandra Sanasam and Art and Culture Director Dr K Sushila attended the event as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking at the event, Jayantakumar said that after the establishment of Cultural University and other related institutions, the number of people visiting the State has increased rapidly.
He assured every possible measures to tackle the problems faced by Manipur University of Culture such as lack of teachers, staff and facilities etc.
Jayantakumar further pointed out that despite its potential to bring fame and recognition to the State even in the international arena, art and culture is mostly neglected by the people as well as the authority concerned and assured to do everything in his power to improve the condition and standard of art and culture of the State.
