COHSEM celebrates silver jubilee :: Never mind questions from students : Guv tells teachers

We should ask how much a child knows instead of how much a child does not know while imparting knowledge to the children.
This was stated by Governor Dr Najma Heptulla while addressing the Silver Jubilee Celebration of Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM) organised by the council at MSFDC auditorium today .
Speaking as the chief guest, Governor Najma Heptulla said that the council has introduced many initiatives and the most important thing is the digitization .
Today students are more independent as compared to our time as they can get every answer that we want and now the world is in our palm today.
Because of the availability of the facilities, research in science and technology is an important addition to seeking knowledge, she added .
Mentioning her experiences in education and political field, the Governor said that there are many things that nobody is expected to know but today how much a child knows should be the way of looking at educational system .
"I want to tell the teachers that the mind of a child is volatile so the teacher should never mind questions of the students as education is not just learning to read and write but it is about knowing your surrounding, observing, questioning etc, she said .
She said that students should spend several numbers of hours on extra curricular activities as most of the time they are inside the four walls gluing to their gadgets .
Recalling Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, she said that quality of mind is important to bring development and progress in the country and we should be able to develop that kind of mind which can think, understand, look around the surrounding and see what can be done for the young minds .
She asserted that students who do not want to go for higher studies but have skills in traditional arts and crafts should be educated through distance learning .
Observing that time has come to think about giving the best education to students at higher secondary level and also on preserving our arts and crafts, which the State is well known, the Governor urged COHSEM to give a holistic approach towards bringing quality education in the State .
We have to work harder to make Manipur at par with other States of the country, she added .
The Governor assured that she would try to solve the problems being faced by students of the State in mainland India .
The Governors' office is planning to organise interaction programmes with the students from next year for every week.
Students selected from all the levels will be invited at the Raj Bhavan to discuss various issues concerning their studies and to see what can be done for them .
Presiding over the function, Minister of Education, Labour & Employment, Th Radheshyam Singh said that COHSEM has come a long way to reach upto this level and it has to move on with the pace of the change .
He asserted that while educating the students we need to know the three important things of education � knowledge, skill and understanding and focus on the changes that are taking place at present .
He maintained that students should think of the future by focussing on their studies .
The also noted that relevancy is the most important theme of education and we should make the students choose their desire subject .
The Minister said that he would take advice and guidance from the Governor from time to time to discuss important issues to improve the activity of the council and the education system in the State .
He assured that his Department is ready to give a helping hand to the council whenever necessary .
During the silver jubilee celebration, a souvenir and annual report of the council were released.
L Mahendra Singh, Chairman, COHSEM; Dr M Bidyasagar, Secretary, COHSEM; noted academicians, teachers and students from various schools were present at the occasion.
