Weeklong plantation drive kicks off at Ukhrul

Ukhrul, June 28 2024:
Deputy Commissioner Ukhrul Kengoo Zuringla launched a weeklong plantation drive of fruit bearing trees at Tangrei Ukhrul in the presence of OC Ukhrul Police Station, Chuingam Ningshen and Horticulture staff including the members of Khamatek, Ukhrul.
The weeklong plantation drive was jointly organised by Khamatek, Ukhrul, District Horticulture & Soils Conservation and Ukhrul Police Station.
The plantation drive began with a prayer by Deaconess of Phungyo Baptist Church Thothingla Shaiza.
Speaking as the chief guest, the Ukhrul DC lauded Khamatek for the noble initiatives taken up to beautify Ukhrul town with fruit bearing trees.

Achieving the objective will naturally bring changes in Ukhrul town and the roadside covered with fruits will attract more visitors, she said.
To mark the launching of the plantation drive, the DC planted apple saplings at the Tangrei locality.
Despite the rain, the volunteers of Khamatek and Ukhrul Police cleaned the roadside and planted more than 50 apple saplings today.
Speaking on the sidelines of the plantation programme, Secretary of Khamatek, Ukhrul M Zimik said the Horticulture & Soil Conservation Department Ukhrul provided more than 200 apple saplings for this plantation drive.
Apple saplings will be planted in Luiyainao Tang, Alungtang, Ukhrul Police Station Tangrei for the first phase while the remaining apple saplings will be planted on the road side of Ukhrul town during the second phase.
The weeklong plantation drive will end on July 6 .
He further mentioned that the main objective of planting fruits bearing trees is to convert Ukhrul as an orchard town of Manipur.
It may be noted that Khamatek is a group of like minded green lovers of Ukhrul town making sincere efforts to reduce plastic waste by installing plastic bottle banks in the town and organising plantation drives for a healthy and greener environment.
