Seminar on legal training begins

A two-day seminaron 'Legal Training and Professional Ethics" was opened today at the High Court of Manipur's auditorium.
Speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function of the seminar which is being organised by the High Court Bar Association, Manipur and the Manipur Judicial Academy, High Court of Manipur Chief Justice M Sundar said that legal training and professional ethics are not just academic concepts but they are pillars upholding the credibility of justice delivery.
Without proper legal training, legal practitioners will not be competent enough and their character will collapse in the absence of ethics, the Chief Justice said.
Legal training is a means of understanding the philosophy of law, the logic of when and where it should be applied and also its moral purpose, Justice M Sundar said.
One major benefit of legal training is the fact that it creates a strong sense of professional ethics among legal practitioners, he said.
He said that the legal training was aimed at enhancing knowledge, skill and values.
He said that the main purpose of legal education is producing competent professionals and Judges.
Underscoring the importance for legal practitioners to strictly adhere to professional ethics, the Chief Justice asserted that no legal practitioner will be successful without adhering to professional ethics.
Among others, the seminar was participated by High Court of Manipur Judge A Guneshwar Sharma, Manipur Judicial Academy Director Golmei Gaiphulshillu, Advocate General Lenin Hijam, Bar Council of Manipur Chairman S Brajabihari, High Court Bar Association Manipur president N Kumarjit, members of High Court Bar Association and the staff of the High Court of Manipur.
Manipur Judicial Academy Joint Director Maibam Manojkumar presented a paper on the topic "Code of Professional Ethics: Lawyer as Psychologist and Legal Professionalism" during the first technical session while High Court of Manipur Senior Advocate HS Paonam spoke on "Role of Senior Advocates in Bar and Bench Relationship; Duties and Obligations of Advocates" .
