School students sensitised on Sangai Day

Imphal, June 07 2025:
A one-day School Students' Sensitisation Programme in observance of Sangai Day was organised at the auditorium of Ideal School, Thanga Khoirom Hillock on Saturday.
The event was jointly organised by Sangai First Foundation and Ideal School, Thanga, drawing a total of 85 participants including students, teachers, parents and community members.
The function was attended by Sangai First Foundation managing trustee Dr Khangembam Shamungou, trustee Kumam Jugeshor, Environmental Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum vice president Salam Brajakumar and Ideal School, Thanga principal Tongbram Brojen as presidium members.

In his keynote address, K Jugeshor highlighted the ecological, socio-cultural, and economic significance of the Sangai deer and its natural habitat.
He emphasised the urgency of community-based conservation and student involvement in protecting this endangered species.
Dr Kh Shamungou delivered a detailed presentation on the conservation challenges of the Sangai, focusing on its only natural habitat, the Keibul Lamjao Floating National Park.
He elaborated on the past and present ecological health of the park and raised concerns over the impact of the Ithai Barrage on Loktak Lake's environment and ecology.
At the event, Ningthoujam Lanchenbi, a class IX student of Chingmei High School also shared her personal efforts and community-based initiatives to spread conservation awareness among her peers, family and local community, inspiring others to take similar actions.
A spot quiz contest on Sangai and wildlife was also conducted, where 12 students out of 70 were selected as winners.
The awards for the spot quiz contest winners will be presented on the 2nd Sangai Day observance to be held on December 10.A set of wildlife books authored by Dr Shamungou were presented to the Ideal School Library to support future learning and research.
The event concluded with a pledge by all attendees to support the conservation of the Sangai deer, protect wildlife, and promote sustainable environmental practices.
