Many demand capital punishment of accused

Imphal, July 20 2023: Many condemned the horrific act two women stripped, paraded naked, groped and allegedly gang raped by a mob, a video ol which has gone viral, and demanded capital punishment to the culprits.

In a release, Poumai Naga Union Delhi (PNUD) stated that the crime committed by the perpetrators has shocked everyone beyond the limits.

"What would the perpetrators do if this happened to any of their family members as they did to these women?" they questioned.

The horror of seeing hatred or fear enacted and violence has become far too rampant.

The recent brutal killing of Lucy Marem Maring was also the testimony of how anything can happen under the eyes of the law with no shame and remorse, the Union said.

The Association of Theologically Trained Women of India (ATTWI)-Mizoram, Naga Women's Union, Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL), Rongmei Naga People's Organization, Meitei Leepun, Delhi Association Of Manipur Muslim Students (DAMMS), North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS), Union of Social Upliftment, Federation of Civil Society Organisation (FOCS), Manipur People's Party, Citizens for Justice Manipur, Sagolband Apunba Lup and United Protection Committee also denounced the atrocities committed against the two women at B Phainom village in the strongest terms and added that the incident has shaken and shamed the entire country.

The organisations/unions described the act as total dishonouring of women community and called upon the authority to process for capital punishment for slaughtering womanhood.

Authorities concerned should identify and apprehend the heartless perpetrators so that stringent actions are taken against them, they stressed and urged for protection of every individual's right to life, liberty and security, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, or any other characteristic.

Violence against women has been instrumentalised by miscreants and communal groups that have sought revenge for incidents of violence faced by their respective communities by targeting those, especially women, who are unconnected to the acts of violence.

A vicious, never-ending cycle of vengeful violence continues to erupt in the state with the continued failure of the state government to act against such miscreants, they denounced.

While urging the Supreme Court to take cognizance of the incidents of violence against women and children, and issue directions to the state government to immediately arrest all the culprits stoking communal riots and violence against women, they also sought effective measures to bring justice and peace to the whole state.

Meanwhile, North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) activists participated in a protest demonstration at Manipur Bhawan against the eart-wrenching incident on Thursday and demanded that Manipur Chief Minister taking responsibility for failing to protect women in the state should immediately resign.
