Centre responsible for lawlessness in hills: KKL

Imphal, August 07 2023: Holding the Central government responsible for lawlessness in hill areas of Manipur, Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL) said India's prolonged divisive policy led to the present conflict between the two communities in Manipur which is stalling the development process.

According to a statement of KKL, the Central government trying to divide the people of Manipur for the past many decades could be comprehended from Union home minister Amit Shah's reported advice to chief minister N Biren Singh that he (Amit Shah) will take care of the hills vis-a-vis the present crisis while leaving the valley affairs to CM.

Another example is Amit Shah's assurance given to the Kukis to remove all state forces from Moreh which is the main reason for 70 personnel of state forces sent to Moreh still stuck at Tengnoupal, the KKL said and demanded clarification in this regard from the Union home minister.

In its suggestions to state and central governments for ending the present crisis, KKL stated that as Kukis are refugees and not indigenous to Manipur it is not right for the Kukis to demand separate land or administration.

To end the present conflict, the Kukis should tender apology for waging the war against indigenous Meetei people, the KKL said.

KKL also opined that only those Kukis facilitated settlement in Manipur by successive Meetei kings should be allowed to stay back while those infiltrated later must be deported.

Apart from this, the Kukis should not be allowed to settle within 20 km of national highways and nearby sacred religious sites like Koubru and Thangjing.

It also said that refugee status given to the Kukis by the Meetei kings must be retained and the Kukis should not be allowed to hold any administrative post and barred from contesting elections.
