Dr Palin advocates deceased organ donation in State

Saying that the demand for organ donors in the State is huge, Managing Director of Shija Hospital and Research Institute (SHRI) Dr Kh Palin called upon the people to promote and endorse deceased organ donation in the State to save lives of others .
Addressing a press conference held at SHRI auditorium today, Dr Palin conveyed that only around 7000 kidney transplantations can be done out of the total requirement of 2 lakh in the country in a year .
He underscored the need to create awareness among the masses about deceased organ donation in order to meet the demand .
Stating that live organs of dead people are wasted by burning down or cremating as per one's customs, he informed that eight live organs can be retrieved from a dead person and the same can be used for restoring lives of eight persons .

SHRI has the infrastructure and manpower to carry out kidney transplantation.
Best efforts will be put in to equip the institute with necessary infrastructure for all forms of deceased organ transplantation in the days to come, he maintained .
He said that JNIMS, RIMS and SHRI are jointly advocating for deceased organ transplantation in the State.
State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) has already been formed in the State under National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) with Dr Sholay as its nodal officer, he added .
Professor Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee, MOHAN Foundation informed that 67 percent of the total 1.6 lakh annual road accidents in India suffered head injury while 90 percent of the head injury are brain dead cases .
He said that deceased organ donation is widely done in South India and now it is getting a foothold in Rajasthan .
Professor Shroff who is also the Senior Consultant and Transplant Surgeon, Madras Medical Mission urged the people of the State to promote and create awareness on deceased organ transplantation .
He also asked the media fraternity in the State to do the same, saying the role of media in this regard is vital .
He claimed that some National media are sponsoring in the promotion campaign on deceased organ transplantation since the last six years .
He said that his institution (MOHAN Foundation) is making efforts to set up a network with the Manipur Government for promoting and initiating deceased organ donation .
He exuded confidence that deceased organ transplantation will be possible in Manipur and North East region within a short span of time .
Stressing on the need for providing training for transplantation of organs from deceased persons to the staff of the hospitals or institutions concerned, the Professor said that the number of organ donation has increased to 5 percent from 4 percent after MOHAN Foundation provided trainings to staff of various hospitals in the country .
Lalitha Raghuram, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation termed deceased organ donation as the most sustainable way for organ transplantation as it does not harm the health of the organ donors.
She said that Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) was formed for North East Region.
Certain initiatives for deceased organ transplantation have been initiated at Guwahati, she added .
If relatives and families of donators do not like to donate the organs of their deceased donators at the last hour or want to withdraw the agreement signed in the past, authorities concerned will not make any coercion or objection to their wish, she said .
Professor Nitya Krishnan, Transplantation Consultation, University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, NHS Trust and Dr Sholay Meitei, Assistant Professor, Urology Department, JNIMS were present among others at the press conference.
