Imphal, July 20 2023: Several women organisations have decried the act of stripping and parading two women in the nude as a direct challenge to all women and a crime against humanity.

Condemning the incident in the strongest terms, Women Association for Socio-Economic Development (WAFSED) president RK Tharaksana said that it was an act of some brutes.

Speaking to media persons this afternoon at the office of COCOMI, RK Tharaksana who is also an executive member of COCOMI said that all the women members of COCOMI have been deeply hurt and shocked by the bestial act.

She then questioned as to why the National media took so long to bring out the incident if it had happened several weeks back.

"Had the National media brought out the incident in time, the savage criminals, even if they belong to our community, could have been hunted down and awarded exemplary punishment," Tharaksana said.

By bringing out the bestial incident only today, justice has been delayed, she said.

"We were deeply hurt and shocked when Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue in the Parliament today.

As a woman and as a mother, we condemn the incident in the strongest term", she said.

"At the same time, we feel totally marginalised by the complete silence of almost all National leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the continuous acts of burning down houses, killing people, the ever rising number of widows, orphans and the unfathomable misery of displaced people," she continued.

To ensure sense of fairness and justice, how Meitei people were killed, thrown out of their homes with their houses burnt down and suffered at the hands of Kuki aggression should also have been raised and discussed in the Parliament just as the particular incident of parading two women in nude, Tharaksana said.

She said that they would urge the authorities concerned to award befitting punishment to all the perpetrators of the heinous crime.

Kanglamei president Y Leirik Leima said that Manipuri mothers would have awarded befitting punishment to all the perpetrators of the heinous crime, whether they belong to Meiteis, Kukis, Nagas or another community if the mothers had known about it earlier.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah came to the State 28 days after eruption of the violent conflict, met many women organisations and assured that he would come back soon but he has not spoken a word since then.

All these time, the Centre has been keeping silent.

As indicated by his complete silence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems to have little empathy for the suffering Meitei people, she said.

While conveniently overlooking all the difficulties and misery being endured by Meitei people in their efforts to save the State from drugs and its disastrous impacts, the particular criminal incident was picked up selectively and discussed in the Parliament to defame the whole community, Leirik Leima said.

As for the perpetrators of the heinous crime, they may be hanged till death.
