World Alzheimer's Day celebrated

The Department of Psychology, Manipur University in collaboration with the Indian Medical Association (Manipur Branch) observed World Alzheimer's Day at Court Hall, MU under the theme "Never too early, never too late" today.
The ceremony was graced by Professor Naorem Lokendra Singh, Vice Chancellor, MU as the chief guest; Professor H Priyosakhi Devi, Dean, School of Medical Sciences, MU as the guest of honour; Professor RK Lenin Singh, president, Indian Medical Association (Manipur Branch), Department of Psychiatry, RIMS Imphal as the resource person and Professor N Jibonkumar Singh, Dean, School of Human and Environmental Sciences, Head of Department, Psychology, MU as the functional president.

Speaking as the chief guest, Professor Naorem Lokendra highlighted the importance of addressing Alzheimer's Disease as most people usually group mental health issues under the common heading/concept of "Angaoba" in Manipur.
In this regard, he pointed out that addressing other mental health issues is also the need of the hour.
The MU VC also acknowledged the contribution of the Department of Psychology, MU in advocating for issues related to mental health.
Giving a detailed explanation on Alzheimer's Disease, Professor RK Lenin, in his speech, proceeded to break the stereotype around aging and encouraged people to accept aging gracefully.
He further emphasized on the importance of public awareness about the disease and the necessity of timely intervention as there is no cure to Alzheimer's Disease but it can only be managed.
Meanwhile, Professor S Jibonkumar Singh presented a clear picture on the prevalence of Alzheimer's Disease and the challenges/adversities brought about by the disease.
Stating that every three seconds, someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, he attributed this increase rate to sedentary lifestyle.
Therefore he urged people to communicate, interact and seek happiness.
It is worth noting that Alzheimer's Disease is a brain disorder which is one of the main causes of dementia.
Dementia is cognitive decline, the most significant one is memory loss.
World's Alzheimer's Day is celebrated each year on September 21 .
