Imphal, March 19 2012:
Till now, the state is facing various problems in organising and hosting many major events of sports due to lack of proper stadium, even though Manipur is termed as the powerhouse of sports for India.
But the waiting is over as the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex will be upgraded at a cost of Rs 75 crore under a special upgradation grant by the 13th Finance Commission.
Manipur Developement Society (MDS) has been assigned as the implementing agency.
MDS is planning to complete the upgradation work by 2015 .
Besides upgradation of complex and playgrounds in the stadium, the project will also upgrade road system, drainage system and parking areas.
After the fifth National Games was held in the stadium, upgradation and renovation work of the Complex have almost come to a halt.
The only renovation work which are carried out in the stadium is the painting of stadium walls and blacktopping of roads inside the complex.
No visible development can be seen in the complex after more than a decade.
Under the project, the Main Stadium, Hockey Stadium, Cycle Velodrome, Aquatic Complex, Indoor Stadium, Shooting Range, Kangshang, Internal road, Coumpound Wall, Electrification and Practice Field Pavilion will be upgraded.
The Main Stadium will be upgraded at a cost of Rs 28.82 crore, Rs 18.8 crore for Hoekey Stadium, Rs 2.4 crore for Cycle Velodrome, Rs 14.63 for Aquatic Complex, Rs 2.71 for Indoor Stadium, Rs 0.29 crore for Chooting Range, Rs 0.29 for Kangshang, Rs 2.39 crore for Internal Road, Rs 1.1 crore for Compound Wall, Rs 49 lakh for Electrification and Rs 60 lakh for Practice Field Pavilion and Toilet facilities.
Once the upgradation process has been completed, the complex will become an nouveau complex.
Since long, the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (DYAS) has been planning to upgrade the complex.
The Gaint Score Boards in the Main Stadium and Hockey Stadium will be replaced with new LCD Boards.
The Astro turf of the Hockey Stadium will also be replaced with new ones under the project.
Besides roofing the VIP gallery of the Hockey Stadium, the public gallery on the western side of the main stadium will also be enlarged in order to increase the seat capacity of the stadium.
Even though the stadium has a total capacity of 20,000 spectators at present, it has become overcrowded in almost all major tournaments.
It was only in the recent past when large numbers of football fans have to stay outside the stadium during a match between Manipur XI and FC Kickers, Japan organised by the Manipur Tourism Forum.
