Mentally challenged girl allegedly raped at Thoubal district

In a shocking incident, a 22-year-old mentally and physically challenged girl has not only experienced the trauma of miscarriage but also been diagnosed as HIV positive after she was allegedly raped by a man of her locality.
The girl hails from Leishangthem Awang Leikai of Thoubal district.
The accused, Yumnam Kumar (50) of the same locality has been absconding ever since the victim's family came to know about the incident.
Speaking to reporters at the office of Young Women Help Organization, Keishampat, the girl's mother said that they came to know about the incident after her daughter experienced excessive bleeding on January 1 last.
The girl was rushed to a hospital the same day and doctors confirmed about miscarriage, she added.
Shocked by the incident, the victim's family tried to know about the accused from the victim.
However, it took many days as the victim is mentally challenged, the mother said.
One day, her daughter revealed the name of Yumnam Kumar that added another mental trauma to the family as the man is HIV positive.
The girl was immediately rushed to the hospital for HIV testing and diagnosed with the dreaded disease, the mother lamented.
Victim's mother said that the accused has been absconding ever since she complained about the beastly act to his family.
However, the accused family requested her to settle the matter over a compensation of Rs 30, 000, she added.
Maintaining that she does not want the compensation, she urged all concerned to extend help in giving befitting punishment to the accused.
Taking part in the press conference, YWHO secretary A Robita said, the organisation has taken serious note of the incident.
The accused and his family must contact the organisation at the earliest.
Saying that the organisation will extend all possible help to the victim's family, she said that the organisation is even ready to take legal recourse, she added.
