Imphal, September 20:
The local people of Uchiwa have voluntarily begun from today the task of dredging the Uchiwa Santhel Khong, an important outlet to drain off excess water from Ikoppat in Thoubal district, but had remained sealed up due to siltation and indiscriminate dumping of waste materials for the last 40 years.
The task of dredging the Santhel Khong has been taken up as there is the fear of extinction of the lake which has a place of honour in the history of Manipur, Haobijam, an elderly local person said.
Prior to construction of the three-tier Khong, the Ikop pat used to serve as the main source of water and rare species of fishes, informed the elderly person with a sense of nostalgia.
